Can you move your Claude chats and projects to another account?

Last updated 2026-08-17 · Confidence: documented — Anthropic’s help center on export and org migration; the no-import gap also reported first-hand; the agent-rebuilds-projects route is inferred.

Only in one direction: a personal account can migrate one-way into a Team or Enterprise workspace; between personal accounts there is an export but no import.

Personal → org: a real one-way migration

Accepting an org invite with a personal account on your work email offers to move the account in: chats and artifacts, Projects with their instructions and files, uploads, tasks, memory, and settings all transfer. Custom skills, app authorizations, published artifacts, and public share links don’t. It’s permanent — “once content has been moved, it can’t be moved back to a personal account.”

Data export lives in Settings → Privacy (web or desktop, not mobile); a download link arrives at the account’s email address. The ZIP holds your conversation history as JSON plus account data — readable, not restorable: “exported data can’t be imported into another personal Claude account.” A March 2026 first-hand report confirms nothing changed by then; the export exists for GDPR/CCPA compliance.

On Team and Enterprise plans only the org’s Primary Owner can run exports, so members can’t even self-export their chats — relevant to who owns team chats. Personal chats that ended up in a team account can only be moved by hand: paste each conversation into the new account, or save it to files. Cheaper to keep personal work on a personal account from day one.

A coding agent can read the export’s JSON and classify old conversations into per-project context files, so re-seeding projects in a new account is one paste each. No public API creates claude.ai projects, so it can’t push them in directly.

Can you run a work and a personal account side by side? Yes. If both are on the same email, an in-app switcher sits under your initials, bottom-left. Different emails mean logging out and back in — the desktop app has no multi-account switching — so use two browsers or browser profiles, one per account (see Desktop app vs browser).
