What does the Claude desktop app do that claude.ai in the browser doesn't?

Everyday chat is the same everywhere; the desktop app adds access to your computer — local files via Cowork, a system-wide shortcut with dictation and screenshots, and local extensions — so it’s worth installing for those, not for chat.

Same core, different reach

Anthropic pitches the desktop app as “All of Claude, in one app”: chat works on every plan, and conversations, projects, and connectors are the same product as the browser. The differences are all about reaching outside the chat window.

What only the desktop app can do

  • Cowork with your local files. Cowork is Claude as an agent that “works across your files and tools” — point it at a folder and it reads, edits, and organizes documents, showing each step. Per the surface comparison, “desktop offers the complete experience”: local file access, browser use, computer use (a research preview for Pro/Max), live artifacts, and “local connectors and plugins that include local MCP servers” are desktop-only. Cowork requires a paid plan (Pro or up).
  • Quick entry (Mac only). “Double-tap the Option key to open Claude from any app”, capture a screenshot or an app window as context, and “press Caps Lock to dictate your message with real-time transcription” (dictation needs macOS 14+). All plans, including free. Windows gets the app “but without the quick entry features.”
  • Desktop extensions. One-click installable local MCP servers — no JSON editing or dependencies.
  • Claude Code built in (Pro+) — irrelevant if you don’t code.

What the browser now matches

Since July 2026, Cowork is in beta on web and mobile for Pro/Max: cloud sessions run on Anthropic’s servers, and “scheduled tasks run in the cloud, so they no longer need your computer to be awake” (details in claude-event-triggers.md). But even from the web, “local file access… works through the Claude Desktop app” — the app must be open on that computer.

Platforms

Mac (macOS 11+), Windows 10+, and a Linux beta (no computer use or dictation). Nothing in the official docs lists a browser feature the desktop app lacks.

For a non-programmer: the browser stays fine for chat, connectors, and cloud Cowork; install the desktop app when a project should touch files on your machine, and for Caps-Lock dictation and the double-Option shortcut.
