Does AI tooling really come to Mac first, and what specs does it need?
Last updated 2026-08-17 · Confidence: documented — vendor launch pages, changelogs, and Anthropic’s install docs; the Cowork launch gap comes from dated press coverage; no vendor publishes a RAM minimum, so sizing rests on a first-hand report.
Mac-first is a real, dated pattern: Windows versions of the major AI desktop tools have followed macOS by five to thirteen months, though Anthropic’s 2026 releases cut the gap to weeks. Any recent Mac meets the specs; Windows additionally needs hardware virtualization for the agent tools.

- Cowork: macOS research preview January 2026 → Windows February 10, 2026, at feature parity; no Linux app at all.

Alejo recommends a Mac for anyone going hard on AI tools, and frames the upgrade as minutes-saved arithmetic: a few minutes a day over a year pays for the machine.
Specs: any recent Mac; Windows needs virtualization
Section titled “Specs: any recent Mac; Windows needs virtualization”Anthropic’s install docs set Cowork’s floor: macOS 14+ on Apple silicon or Intel; Windows 10 build 19041+ on x64 or Arm64, plus working hardware virtualization — a free, no-install readiness check verifies a machine. The virtualization prerequisite is the Windows setup friction people hit: each session runs in a VM (see Cowork’s sandbox), so Windows must enable its virtual-machine feature and restart first.
The heaviness is structural: session start fetches a multi-gigabyte VM workspace bundle — offline installers bundling it are “several gigabytes larger” — and runs the agent inside it. No RAM minimum is published; an M1 MacBook Air runs Cowork but froze noticeably in sustained use. If freezes are daily, the same minutes-saved arithmetic argues for a newer chip and more memory.
